Helmut Lang and Modernity

I throw around terms like “minimalism” and “draping” pretty often on this blog so I am going to try to describe the work of Helmut Lang without falling back on either. Though the brand is now known for their contemporary basics in the 90′s Helmut Lang was on the fore front of luxe work wear for creative types. At it’s peak (late 80′s-early 90′s) Helmut Lang was compared to Comme des Garcons for it’s deconstructive style. Though creative control is no longer in the hands of the actual (person) Helmut Lang, the current creative directors try to uphold the brand’s tradition of sharp lines and intellectual design albeit in a more commercial form.

Happy 76th birthday to Issey Miyake, born April 22, 1938.

I am proud to share the spectrum of original Miyake designs that have come through our stores in the past few months:

The internet tells me that it is officially Spring time now. This means that though it may still be too early to start wearing your favorite pair of formal shorts, you can start reintroducing color into your wardrobe.  Nothing says “I am ready to see the sun again” like the designs of Emilio Pucci. In my experience vintage Pucci is light-weight and vibrant, it brings to mind smiling, tan, “rebel aristocrat” Italian girls. Pucci is one of the brands I find very sporadically in our stores but I am excited to share a few of the pieces I have encountered as of late:

Irving Penn x Versace

No offense to Donatella but I feel like the Versace brand got a little murky after the untimely death of Gianni Versace. By the time I was getting into fashion, Versace was associated with “bling” and their designs were hard to differentiate from other glamorous Italian brands like Dolce & Gabbana. It has really taken this wave of vintage Versace donations we have gotten in the Ebay office to make me appreciate the work of the brands originator.

There is no other word for it . . .vintage Versace is SICK (in the best way possible). From what I have seen Gianni Versace is not afraid of being more artistic at the expense of being obviously sexy. The hems are longer than what you might expect and drape the body in a way that reminds me forcibly of contemporary Japanese fashion. Below are a few of my favorite items that have come across my desk:

Judith Leiber vs. SATC

There is this famous “Sex and the City” episode where Carrie throws a fit (of epic proportions) because Mr. Big buys her a Judith Leiber bag, which she considers an insult to her individuality. Whenever I catch that episode I almost spasm in irritation because she is being totally INSANE. Even though her accessories are  a little too Baroque for my style I still think Judith Leiber, especially vintage Judith Leiber, is rad.

While Judith Leiber is most synonymous with crystal handbags I think her belts are more collectible. Each one that I have come across feels unique and one of a kind. The ones I have featured below were not part of a single donation but came across my desk over the course of a few months. It seems more people feel the way I do than Carrie because we always manage to sell out of them within days.
